Cooperation at all levels of language and speech technologyFormed in 2001, the NOTaS foundation encourages and facilitates invaluable networking between researchers, developers and application specialists. Participants share data, knowledge and experience to promote this growing sector in the Netherlands. Increased research capacity for HLT companiesNOTaS academic members provide companies with fresh input and ideas for their research and development activities. Access to data and real-life scenarios for university researchersNOTaS combines top researchers from some of the Netherlands’ leading academic institutions with developers working on language and speech technology solutions for some of the world’s largest corporations. This cooperation gives researchers access to huge amounts of data, as well as a testing ground from which to gain valuable new insights. The cooperation between academic institutions has enabled participants in NOTaS in break down historic barriers between researchers and developers. It is often difficult for academic institutions to get hold of sufficient relevant data. Companies, on the other hand, struggle to keep up with the latest developments. All forms of cooperation are therefore beneficial to both groups, whether this involves actually working together on a project or simply keeping each other informed of the possibilities. Academic institutions gain a greater insight into the actual problems faced by organisations and companies benefit from knowing what is, and is not possible currently and what is just around the corner.
